Michael Cooke’s Bubu (New Music)

Dec 9, 2019 | 6 comments

New music from Subud L.A.’s Michael Cooke:

This tune “BuBu” is in tribute to my dear friend Alex’s wife whose actual name is Anabella, but is known affectionately by those close to her as “BuBu”. Had had the basis of the melody for some time. Recently returned to it and elaborated more on the overall concept and bridge of the piece. What is appreciated (after the fact, that is to say after shooting the video) was to be contentedly reminded that ‘bubu’ is not only a nickname (could also be spelled Boo Boo) but is also a widespread loving term of endearment as well.

  1. Hi Michael.
I enjoyed listening to Bubu. The blend of jazzy rhythms and fluidity.
I also improvise and write music. It’s easy to unconsciously reproduce some lovely phrase heard elsewhere so I have one small suggestion. Listen to the classic song ‘Misty’ especially the distinctive first 3 notes: ‘Look at me…’, as I think they are one of your themes (both the notes and rhythm) near the end of Bubu. Maybe just a small creative tweak could save the composition from that one familiar resonance?

Wishing you well with your lovely music.

    • Stefan, It’s a jazz technique to sample familiar tunes. FYI. Thanks for reading (& listening!) Paul

  2. Dear Michael
May God bless you… an for sharing this. My ears really appreciated what came to them. Lately have been drawn to a keyboard and maybe? have the tiniest inkling of the inner and outer that went into BuBu so that it could finally arrive into the world for others. Hope it inspire in all the Best ways.

  4. Really nice piece. Back in a previous life I would listen to music and let it walk away with me. Late night jazz or classical was my other world. Loved applying paint to canvas and was always blown away by the coincidence of finding out what the title of the piece was or history of the work and what began to come into focus on the canvas. Loved connecting like that with real artists. After awhile I stopped the late night stuff to focus on real life but never seemed to lose the love of being connected to the view that music gives us. Thanks for Bu Bu. About half way through my eyes closed and since its still dark outside and it snowed last night and I can feel the cold in the house and hear the music letting me just go. Well have you seen the sun shine on a snowy day ? Blue sky and crystal cold warmed by the sun. Then the piece came to the end and I opened my eyes and you had the Bu Bu poster with the sun shining and the Bu Bu clouds. Loved it. Thanks

  5. To all who have responded so warmly in re my piece “BuBu”. I am most moved by your sensitive insightful comments and sharing. I cannot thank you enough! – You’ve placed a most welcome skip in my step – and without tripping and falling too.
    – On an encroaching Holidays front, why don’t we all of recall and act on that bygone notion of Peace On Earth! How’s about THAT for a gimmick?! Aw, for Pete’s sakes “Vote for Pete Clearwater” (see mock-up enclosed, if the Reply will let me. It was a bit Lucas Mason of Subud New York and I cooked up to cure all the problems of the world in the form of one man – Pete Clearwater, Lucas’s nom de plume for his oncoming presidential bid)!
