Poems for Peace

SICA-USA is teaming up with SICA-International to revision the Poems for Peace project and the Zoomuse project. Poems for Peace was started by Latifah Taormina in 2012. Zoomuse was started by (unofficial) Subud Poet Laureate Emmanuel Williams in 2020 as a pandemic lockdown activity and it turned out to be very well-attended.

On Thursday, October 21, 2021, at 11am PDT (2pm EDT) you can hear Andrew Schelling, poet, teacher, translator. He will talk about his approach to poetry and the connection to peace-making efforts. His bio:

Andrew SchellingAndrew Schelling was born on January 14, 1953, in Washington D.C., and grew up west of Boston in Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1973, he moved west to Northern California where he explored the wilderness regions of the Coast Range and Sierra Nevadas and studied Sanskrit and Asian literature at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Along with being a poet and translator, Schelling is an ecologist and naturalist, having travelled extensively in North America, Europe, India, and the Himalayas. In 1990 he relocated to Colorado to join the faculty at Naropa University.

Schelling’s poetry collections include A Possible Bag (Singing Horse Press, 2013), From the Arapaho Songbook (La Alameda Press, 2011), Old Tale Road (Empty Bowl Press, 2008), Tea Shack Interior: New & Selected Poetry (Talisman House, 2002), The Road to Ocosingo (Smokeproof Press, 1998), and Old Growth: Poems and Notebooks 1986-1994 (Rodent Press, 1995). He is also the author of Wild Form, Savage Grammar: Poetry, Ecology, Asia (La Alameda Press, 2003). READ MORE.

I have had the good fortune to interview Andrew on several occasions. See:

I consider Andrew one of my teachers, a brilliant poet and poetry mind and admire his translation skills. I think you will find this to be an amazing session and encourage you to attend.

We plan to present Poems for Peace monthly, on the third Thursday and on September 21, 2022, we hope to stage an iteration of the event in-person with a Zoom component. It is a wonderful experience to organize culture with international partners and we hope only the beginning. This is an excellent of Subud being active in the world and reaching out beyond our own Subud-centric networks. Please consider attending and spreading the word about this event.

Yours in Peace and Subud Culture,

Paul E Nelson

I was intrigued to see a book by Shelling called Tracks Along the Left Coast, about Jaime de Angulo and
the culture of Big Sur. I lived in Big Sur during the early 60’s and knew some characters, though I never met Jaime. I did meet Rosalind Sharpe Wall, a Subud member who was raised in Big Sur. She went to school with the children of Steinbeck and Robinson Jeffers, and wrote a book about Big Sur pioneers
and artists called “A Wild Coast and Lonely”. She rode horseback down paths and remote trails, meeting many isolated eccentrics including Jaime.
