The pieces shown represent two threads of my interest, one being the representing of the way things look, and the other being the representing of things seen through the lens of feeling or awareness. The line drawing of various objects is an example of the former, and the other two are examples of the latter.

The painting, Camassia with Tulips and Roses, was based on ideas from a workshop before the 2014 National Congress. Hand-painted China Silk Scarf. The project was a national banner and the ideas were about how to express the spirit of Subud USA.

Hellene Higgins Chapman
I started painting in the 1970s and took art classes at a local community college. I went on to get a Master’s Degree in Studio Art from Northern Arizona University, with honors in painting. I was fascinated with color and the effects colors have on each other and began working in a more abstract style. I have shown my artwork in Arizona, where I sold some larger pieces. I also exhibited in New Mexico, Oxford England and the Northwest. I sold several paintings at the World Congress in Spokane in 1997 and at a gallery owned by Ruth Gullixson, a Subud sister. Devry University owns a couple of my paintings. I also taught art to young children through the Arts in Education program run by a local art center, where I have exhibited and sold some of my paintings.

Sarah Wroe Clark
I have been collecting sand from all over the globe—or my wonderful friends have brought me sands from their travels—for nearly 30 years. I use the sand to create work that I hope will make the viewer aware of the endless variety of the earth and express something about my feelings about it. Also, my happy place is a beach.

Roberta is a graphic designer, illustrator, web designer, and web developer. She works in dip pen, pencil, digital, gouache, watercolor, and acrylic, and likes to juxtapose concepts and interweave humor into her work. Influences include her graphic design studies at UC Berkeley Extension, Pushpin, Low Art, Dada, New Wave, Punk, Grunge, and more; and background in art, including exposure to the Funk Art movement at a young age in California, working in her father’s gallery, learning art practice from her father, Rasjad Hopkins, a painter and sculptor, and her mother, Aisjah Hopkins, an abstract expressionist artist who worked as a ceramist for many years before transitioning to painting.

Camille Hoffvandahl
Camille Hoffvandahl is a visual artist, working in many mediums including clay, yarn, cloth, painting furniture, printmaking and more recently, watercolor. Recently drawn to painting the Native American images photographed by Edward Curtis at the turn of the 20th century. Although his subjects were on reservations when he made his daguerreotypes, they were living an authentic lifestyle and wearing traditional clothing in his photos. She likes to use his compositions because he took great care to preserve the essence of native people.

In my painting, my first priority is to create a sense of freedom of space, color and gesture. To do so, I use a wide range of materials including large brushes, charcoal, different types of paint, pastels, and collage. As I work, I create energy through a spontaneous dialog of marks and color relationships. I feel the painting come alive with movement and countermovement. Planes are juxtaposed creating a staccato beat and I become absorbed with the painting until I sense a visual epiphany. My hope is to communicate this elation to the viewer so he or she will be able to experience it in a similar way.

Anthony LoSchiavo

As a talented child of only ten, Anthony LoSchiavo began his formal art training at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and continued advanced study, on scholarship, at the School of Visual Arts and the Cooper Union in New York. He also attended the Arts Students League as well as private study at the Cape Cod School of Art (founded by Charles W. Hawthorne). Here he concentrated on the Impressionistic method of plein air painting and color theory under Henry Hensche. A professional artist since 1970, LoSchiavo also owned and operated Faces West Portrait Studio and Gallery on historic Cannery Row for 11 years, establishing a national reputation for his pastel and oil portraits. He is adept in oil, pastel and watercolor and versatile in his choice of subject matter. His paintings have been juried into exhibitions with the Pastel Society of America at the National Art Club in New York City, the Monterey Museum of Art, and the Plein Air Painting competition of the Carmel Art Festival. Anthony LoSchiavo has a reputation for sensitive paintings of beautiful light and effect, enjoyed by collectors world-wide.

Daniela Moneta
About the work, DNA: Chromosome Trilogy: Bapak told us to remember and pray for our ancestors going back seven generations, especially during the month before Ramadan. We inherit and carry our ancestors’ DNA in the nucleus of every cell in our body. DNA looks like a spiral staircase (double helix). Under a microscope, we can see our 23 pairs of chromosomes, half from your mother, and half from our father. We pass this on genetically to our children and our children’s’ children.

I have lived in many places all my life so my work is varied in subject matter and media. I lived in Hawaii for 14 years and painted the ocean; in Guatemala I painted volcanoes; in Brazil, exuberant landscapes and in Colorado, the mountains to name a few. In all of these places, I have been concerned with the environment either painting the ocean, waterfalls, forests, mountains or even rainbows thinking they might also be an “endangered species.” My art is focused on the beauty and the fragility of our planet.

Lawrence Pevec
I’ve been an artist and designer my entire life. I enjoyed working in graphic, exhibit, and film / TV design for over fifty years. I’m currently retiring from design / build projects and focusing my creative time on fine art. In the recent years I’ve been exploring encaustic medium. Encaustic: (burn in) is painting with pigmented wax. It is fast and satisfying as so many variations are possible. Many, but not all, of my pieces are mixed media which incorporate photography, found objects, like seeds, collage materials, and other dry media. I’ve been searching for that unique combination that will define my art. It is a joyous journey. All the pieces I’ve submitted to the auction are exploratory and recently done.. between 2021 and 2023.

Olivia Pevec
Olivia is a third generation Subud member and an artist in many media. Currently she teaches metals and Theater Arts at Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) in Carbondale. She is also a singer/songwriter and delights in comparing, contrasting, and mixing expressive forms.

Halimah Elizabeth Polk
My watercolor painting began in 2008 as the combination of having breast cancer and of an inner spiritual push. A beautiful Colombian psychic whom I saw for healing recommended that I change my life and begin to make use of a talent she felt I had in my hands—which confirmed something I was already feeling inside. This was a bit surprising as I had been thrown out of art class when I was very young because the teacher deemed I was too talkative. Luckily, I have found an art teacher and art class where my chatter and singing were happily appreciated. I am drawn to painting landscapes, landscapes that for one reason speak to me and I have experimented with abstract watercolor paintings. My paintings make me happy when I paint them and hopefully, make others happy when they view them!
