Love Letter from our Future

Rosina Newton

The following is a message recently sent out recently to friends, family, and clients. It contains reflections on Earth Day, and it’s also an invitation to listen to a project I just completed: an audio recording of a short story entitled “Love Letter from Our Future.” Writing the original story in 2022 felt like a giant receiving. I felt like I could not not write it. This recording is Episode 9 of my radio show on WNUC-FM Detroit, also entitled “Love Letters from Our Future.” The whole project feels like it is being guided by a power certainly greater than me. If you’ll be at the Subud gathering this July, please look for an opportunity to participate in an extension of this project!

Thank you for being.

Here we are on earth – the only habitable planet in our solar system. We’re celebrating the fact that we have a beautiful, wondrous, miracle-filled planet that supplies all our needs, except for the hugs, affection, and other signals of belonging that we must have from other humans in order to thrive. That’s still a LOT of needs met: clean water to drink, bathe, and play in; clean air to breathe – with just the right level of oxygen; sustenance in the form of food; materials with which to clothe and house ourselves; and amazing colors, birdsong, and other marvels of nature that can nourish our spirit every day.

Thank you, planet.

Of course, we know the old platitude “Earth Day is every day.” I thought of this helpful analogy just yesterday: Ideally, we celebrate our human loved ones in small and large ways every day, like saying “thank you” when they do something nice, or sharing spontaneous bursts of appreciation like, “I love your sense of humor!” and “I’m so grateful you’re in my life!” and “I love you.” But on their birthday, well, that can be a big annual celebration where we really showboat our love and affection and gratitude for them. Earth Day is the birthday of our world. (This is a nod of appreciation to Ursula K. LeGuin, author of The Birthday of the World).

Just so you know: I’m really glad you are on this same planet at the same time as I am.

This all connects – surprisingly, beautifully – to the latest project that I’m excited to share with you. I didn’t know all this would connect so wonderfully when I started typing this 5 minutes ago, but that’s the beauty of It All.

I just finished a bigger-than-usual episode of Love Letters from Our Future, and it is OUT THERE! It is an audio version of the original short story I wrote and published called Love Letter from Our Future. We have four guest narrators! In this roughly one-hour audio recording, Farheen Gill, Leslie Marant, Benedict Herrman, and WNUC’s own Morris Porter contribute quotes from esteemed visionaries and other wise humans.

I would love for you to listen! Listening to audio stories while washing dishes or driving to a familiar destination are two of my favorite ways to enjoy them. It would be icing on the cake if you would send me a note saying you listened. It would be ice cream on the side of that cake if you felt inspired to share feedback too.

“How does the celebration of Earth Day connect to this recording?” you may ask. Love Letter from Our Future is a futuristic utopian fantasy. It a story told in the form of a letter that we have received from a student. This student lives in a world that is one potential “choose your ending,” as-yet-unborn future for us. It is, of course, my own version of an uber-best-case-scenario because – why not? Why don’t we imagine the best world we could possibly create? If we each imagined our own Love Letter from Our Future, describing some sort of idea of where we want to go, wouldn’t we have a better chance of getting there?

How would we be living on this one-of-a-kind earthship if we were doing it all right for the benefit of everyone, every living thing, and our magical earth herself?

It is a fun mental exercise that I’ve been playing with for over four years. Why not?

Here’s the recording of Love Letter from Our Future.
